Curriculum
The subject of language arts consists of reading (literary and nonfiction), writing and grammar. The sixth grade English Language Arts Standards of Excellence are available to view online at https://www.georgiastandards.org. . Each nine weeks we will focus on one type of writing (narrative, informative, argumentative, and compare/contrast). Most of the writing assignments will take place in the classroom; however, there may be some instances in which you will need to complete portions of assignments at home. You will also be assigned one reading project each semester, which will correspond with the literary standards we are focusing on in class. Books for reading projects will be selected from the school media center, but the books and the projects will be completed at home. In addition to book projects, you will be expected to read and explore different genres of books throughout the year. We will be visiting the media center every two weeks. Each Friday you will have a writing assignment in your journal. Journals will be graded each nine weeks as a project; therefore, it is very important to keep up with your entries.
Classroom Management/Expectations
You are expected to enter the classroom quietly, prepared, and ready to work. Being prepared means coming to class with required books, binders, homework, and pencils. Sharpen pencils before class begins. Before beginning your warm-up assignment, always check the homework board and write down assignments/information in your agenda Warm-up assignments will be posted on the board so that you may begin working immediately. Use the restroom before coming to class. (Please do not come into class, set your books down, and then ask to go to the restroom). Cell phones are not allowed in class unless we are using them for an assignment. If I see or hear a cell phone, I will keep it until the end of the day. If there is a second offense, you will be referred to the principal. No food or drink is allowed in class. Water bottles (with lids) are permitted.
Classroom Rules- Be S.M.A.R.T.
Say please and thank you
Make sure you listen
Arrive on time and prepared
Respect yourself and others
Try your best
Grading Policy
Daily activities such as DGP (daily grammar practice), class assignments, and homework will make up 34% of your grade. Quizzes, tests, and projects (including some writing assignments) will make up the remaining 66% of your grade. I will post grades weekly online, and you will keep a section in your binder with graded papers. All graded papers must remain in your binders until the end of the nine weeks. At that time, you may take them home.
Homework will usually be assigned 3 nights per week and will be graded on completion (unless specified otherwise). I will try NOT to give homework on Wednesday nights. Each homework assignment will be counted as a percentage of the overall weekly homework grade. I check homework at the beginning of class. If you do not complete your homework, you will lose choice points in addition to receiving a zero for that day’s homework. You may turn homework assignments in late- with the understanding that you will not receive full credit.
If you fail a quiz or test, you have the opportunity to “re-do and resubmit” (R & R). In order to do R & R, you will need to make an appointment with me either before or after school to retake a quiz or test. The highest grade you may receive for R & R is a 70.
Cheating of any kind (including homework) will not be tolerated. All participants will receive consequences for their part in cheating.
